The Lands Between is a difficult place to live alone. Luckily, for maidenless Terni who seek Elden Lord status, Ring of Elden provides you with plenty of AI-controlled companions, in the form of Spirit Ashes, to aid you in battle. There are dozens of spirits you can summon in boss fights to fight alongside you. But knowing which Spirit Ashes and where to find them isn’t as easy as ringing the bell for cooperative play.
Here are some of the best spiritual ashes you can call upon. Ring of Eldenplus a few others that can punch above their weight and might just save your ass in the early hours of the game. Plus, we’ll walk you through how to level up these summons to maximize their potential.

How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes
lone wolf
Listen to me! The Lone Wolf Ashes are weak, but it’s also one of the first Spirit Ashes players find. They’re also good at distracting and stunning enemies, and since there are three of them, they’ll easily divide enemies’ attention.
Where to find it: In Limgrave, at the Church of Elleh, after acquiring Torrent, the Spectral Steed from Melina. Renna, an NPC, will appear in the church and give you the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.
Summon Cost: 55 FP
Upgrades with: Glove of the Graves

Look, the spirit jellyfish isn’t going to become an Elden Lord on its own anytime soon. It’s one of the weakest summons in the game, but it’s also one of the first you can find. And she’s a useful distraction in the early fights, in case you need a break. I actually managed to defeat one of the game’s main bosses, Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, using Spirit Jellyfish’s poison ability, so she has a special place in my heart.
Where to find it: In Limgrave, at the Stormhill Shack. Talk to Roderika there until she gives you the Ashes of the Spirit Jellyfish.
Summon Cost: 31 FP
Upgrades with: Glove of the Graves
Lhutel the headless
Another early game find, Lhutel the Headless is a capable warrior who will hold you back until something better happens. It’s a tank, absorbing damage and using teleport skills to avoid damage, but requires a relatively large amount of FP to summon from the start.
Where to find it: In the Weeping Peninsula, inside the Tombsward Catacombs south of the Pilgrimage Church, after defeating the graveyard shadow boss.
Summon Cost: 104 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Ancient Adept

Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon
Ashes of the Ancestral Followers have been my favorite summon for many hours in Ring of Elden, as it’s excellent at range – you’ve probably fallen victim to their arrows in the Siofra River – and capable of melee combat. It’s also great for pulling aggro on bosses, giving you a breathing room.
Where to find it: In the Siofra River, after defeating the optional boss Ancestor Spirit.
Summon Cost: 63 FP
Upgrades with: Glove of the Graves
Banished Knight Oleg / Banished Knight Engvell
Fight the banished knights in Ring of Elden can be a nightmare, but having one by your side can be a dream. Banished Knight Oleg can be found relatively early in the game, but acquiring him isn’t easy. You’ll need two Stonesword Keys for one thing, and you’ll need to defeat an Ulcerated Tree Spirit to get the Ashes. But Oleg is quite capable in combat, dealing decent damage and generally being quite sturdy.
Where to find it: In Limgrave, in Fringefolk Hero’s Grave, after defeating the Ulcerated Tree Spirit boss (which will also give you a Golden Seed).
Summon Cost: 100 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Banished Knight Engvell might be the easier of the two to find. He is practically identical to Oleg, but instead of twin swords he has a halberd.
Where to find it: In West Limgrave, at the Murkwater Catacombs, after defeating the Grave Warden Duelist boss.
Summon Cost: 100 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Mimic Teardrop

Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon
It’s the GOAT. The Mimic Tear is basically you, only better. Well, sometimes better. You’ll summon a clone of yourself, which means you’re effectively twice as powerful in every fight the Mimic Tear shows up in. The only problem? Summoning your Mimic consumes a good chunk of your health, so be ready to heal as soon as you ring that Spirit Calling Bell.
Where to find it: In Nokron, Eternal City, in a treasure chest behind the door of an imp statue (you’ll need a stone sword key) in Night’s Sacred Ground. Nokron can be accessed after defeating Starscourge Radahn in Caelid.
Summon Cost: 660 HP (that’s right, hit points!)
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Former Dragon Knight Kristoff
Fighting the Knights of Leyndell sucks! These are the heavily armored fools who summon thunderbolts. That’s why former Dragon Knight Kristoff is so good – he’s one of them! Kristoff has good range, thanks to his follower and lightning, and solid defense, thanks to his large shield.
Where to find it: On the Altus Plateau, at the Tomb of the Sacred Hero, after defeating the boss of the Ancient Hero of Zamor.
Summon Cost: 108 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Tiche black knife

Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon
If you want a fast melee master, Black Knife Tiche is your friend. But she has a high summon cost, and she’s not available until fairly late in the game. Still, her quick and relentless attacks will help put many bosses on their heels.
Where to find it: In southwestern Liurnia, at Leader’s Evergaol, after defeating Alecto, Leader of the Black Knife.
Summon Cost: 132 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Latenna the Albanauric
More of a summonable turret than a full fighter, Latenna is ideal for combat at long range and in more open spaces. But she’ll shoot the crap out of some bosses while you hack them otherwise. And while she’s not too difficult to acquire, getting Latenna’s Ashes requires more than just beating a boss.
Where to find it: In Liurnia of the Lakes, at the Sleeping Wolf’s Hut, accessible after completing the Crystal Cave by the lake. You’ll also need the right half of Haligtree’s Secret Medallion, which you can get from Albus (who’s disguised as a jar!) in the Albinauric Village. Phew!
Summon Cost: 74 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Redmane Knight Ogha

Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon
A summonable version of the Radahn Knights you’ll encounter throughout Caelid, Ogha is a beast. He has a powerful bow and a great sword, making him a strong and well-rounded fighter. You will need to defeat Starscourge Radahn to gain access to the catacombs where Ogha’s Ashes reside.
Where to find it: In Caelid, in the Catacombs of the War Dead, after defeating the boss Putrid Tree Spirit
Summon Cost: 118 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
Manure Eating Puppet
This guy will kill you, curse you, and defile your corpse just for snoring too loudly, but you can also turn this disgusting sadist into a puppet! Haha! To do this, you must follow both the Ranni the Witch questline and the Dung Eater questline, up to the point where the latter is strapped into his chair at the Subterranean Shunning Grounds and Seluvis gives you the potion of Seluvis. Use this potion on old Dung Eater and bring Seluvis five Starlight Shards. All this effort is worth it; Dung Eater is a powerful summon.
Where to find it: From Seluvis, in Seluvis’s Rise, as part of the aforementioned quest steps
Summon Cost: 118 FP
Upgrades with: Ghost Gauntlet
The best of the rest
Spirit Ashes are a personal choice, and you might find another that suits your style of play better. Here are some other great Spirit Ashes to look out for, try out for yourself, and possibly upgrade to:
Beastman Azula
Hugh War Mage
Crystalian
Nightmaiden & Swordstress puppets
Omen Killer Rollo
How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes

During the roundtable, Roderika will serve as your Spirit Tuning resources. Be sure to talk to her early at the Stormhill Shack in Limgrave until you exhaust her dialogue (and she gives you the Ashes of the Spirit Medusa). She will move to the main round table area. Talk to him and Master Hewg, the Round Table blacksmith, several times. Eventually, Roderika will move into the same room as Hewg and upgrade your Ashes.
Level up your Ring of Elden Spirit Ashes require Grave Gloveworts or Ghost Gloveworts, depending on the ash, as well as runes. Funeral gloves can be found worldwide from Ring of Eldenand at some merchants, while Ghost Gloveworts are usually found in the Catacombs.
