Better Call Saul’s Major Season 6 Deaths Are Perfect For The Same Reason

Better Call Saul’s Major Season 6 Deaths Are Perfect For The Same Reason

The speech adds a deep satisfaction to an otherwise tragic death. Of course, such a young life cut short after getting caught in the middle of warring gangs (when all Nacho really wanted was to quit and protect his dad) is deeply harrowing and desperately sad. But that fiery final speech ensures his final moments are also powerful, meaningful, and allow Michael Mando’s character to say everything he must before departing. Exactly the same trick is used for Howard Hamlin’s death in Better Call Saul season 6’s “Plan & Execution.” Turning up drunk at Kim’s apartment, Howard’s zingers are just as hot as Nacho’s. He psychoanalyzes Jimmy and Kim’s entire facade, getting right to the heart of their motivations better than any other character. The HHM boss denounces them both as “soulless,” bemoans Kim’s wasted potential, and invokes the name of Jimmy’s dead brother. Saving the best for last (just like Nacho), Howard wraps up with, “You have a piece missing.”

Howard Hamlin’s pre-death monologue invites exactly the same effect as Nacho’s. The execution of Patrick Fabian’s character is undoubtedly a tragic moment. Not only was the lawyer a civilian in cartel terms, but Howard was already plagued by a dented career and personal struggles – the last thing he needed was a bullet through the head. But in the same way Nacho’s parting shot in “Rock & Hard Place” managed to make a sad death satisfying, Howard too gets a measure of retribution against the people who wronged him. As before, laying everything out on the metaphorical table is a cathartic experience for viewers as much as it is for Howard, so when that shot does come (and audience shock subsides), his Better Call Saul journey feels complete in a melancholic sort of way.
